SNSF is an interactive live performance and audio experience that takes you on a playful journey to tap into your travel desires and changing relationship to air travel. Choose your final travel destination, check in at the airport lounge, and prepare for a new kind of travel experience.

In the lead up to the event, text messages from So Near So Far Travel invite audiences to phone in and record their significant destination. For the actual show, you will arrive at an airport waiting lounge. While you wait, you will meet three main characters who take you on a journey of a different kind, performing across live and mediated domains. Harold is physically in the audience while his close companion Rose Zooms in from overseas via the Departure screens. A recorded guide’s voice also plays intermittently through the earbuds of the audience’s mobile phones.

With an expert guide plugged into your ear, “So Near So Far Travel” takes you on a journey with Harold and Rose through changing landscapes of dis/connection and longing. As their relationship buckles and evolves from the challenges of physical distance, limited time and conflicting desires, we are invited to contemplate our wanderings and the way we stay connected through the world.

This “new travel experience” has been conceived by a travel agency forced to pivot and now provides the cultural service of active reflection on travel. ‘Travellers of the world’ are ushered into a liminal, contemplative space that is deepened with the guide's reflective prompts, critical commentary and the story of Harold and Rose. She facilitates a conversation with ourselves, and at times with others in the room, so that we can acknowledge that things have genuinely changed. Through employing and orchestrating the characters of Harold and Rose, she helps us re/consider the cost of travel and possibilities for connection in our personal and collective futures.

THIS EXPERIENCE IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE TRAVELLED

This performance is for 16+ year olds. With a target age of 30-40 year olds.

So Near/ So Far uses interactive mobile and live streaming technology. The work is between 2 countries at a time. We are currently working with artists in Queensland, Norway and New Mexico. The possibilities are endless.

SUITABLE VENUES

It is very flexible; it suits venues (in the foyer ) as well as festival environments (at an airport). We will need a lounge space as well as a check in space. Audience will walk from the check in space to the lounge so there needs to be room between the two spaces for walking.

PRODUCTION DETAILS

Known critical technical requirements are 3 x 50inch or larger TV screen and AV equipment. Seating for 20 people.

MARKETING

All copy , images and promo video will be made available

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT

Place is very important to the work of SNSF. It will be important for the core team (writer, director, performer) to spend a day in the community getting a feel for the area ( this may just be one team member and the other two online depending on location). Ideally there is an opportunity for an emerging writer/performance maker to work with the team to update the script based on the location. This content is then added into the show.

Workshops in writing, physical theatre and contemporary performance making techniques can also be offered for an addition fee and determined in collaboration with the presenter.
